Pokemon Diamond: The Luxray Solo Run

I declare the Pokemon Summer Season 2019 open! Granted, it's a bit early; but getting a quick taste of Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni made me realize that what I really wanted was some easy grinding, preferably in a relaxing and mellow game world. And what better series to fit that bill than Pokemon? None, indeed! Follow me now for yet another entry in my ever-growing list of fulfilled and fulfilling Pokemon solo runs, dear fellow gamers!

I'm now back to the game that started it all for me when it comes to all things Pokemon: Pokemon Diamond, i.e. my First Ever Pokemon Entry. Although I have the fondest memories of that game, I've not touched it since my first and only playthrough in 2014; as a matter of fact, I've played the whole jewellery trilogy surprisingly little given how crucially important it was for the genesis of my love for the Pokemon franchise, with only four runs under my belt between Platinum, Diamond and Pearl. And it's not like the Sinnoh region lacks viable solo runs material, oooh no precious; heck, there are some 'Mons out there I've been itching to run solo with for years. As one of the two Sinnoh regional cats, Luxray is obviously such a 'Mon although to be fair, I've already cruised with the electric lynx, along with his fellow Purugly; but that duo run was never completed and thus got lost in the sands of time. I'm now back at it, and for good this time. No more interlopers here's a pure Luxray solo run for you, dear fellow gamers!

Luxray is special in many regards. For once, he's one of these 'Mons that solely roams his home region and can hardly be found in the wild beyond the game that introduced him. For another, he's one of only a handful of Electric 'Mons introduced in Gen IV, and one of the precious few that boasts pure Electric Type. Last but not least, his looks and Move Pool are weirdly at odds with said pure Electric Type. Not only does Luxray don a gorgeous graphite fur coat as he evolves, but he can also learn two powerful Dark Moves along the way, namely Bite and Crunch; with such attributes, one may expect the Sinnoh lynx to boast a double Electric/Dark Type only to be thoroughly surprised when Luxray turns out to be pure Electric. There's been some speculation about Luxray being originally intended as a dual Electric/Dark 'Mon, before GameFreak changed him to a pure Electric Type for reasons known to them only; but no matter where the truth lies, I'm rather happy with Luxray's actual Type. Not being Dark means that he only has Ground 'Mons to worry about; and with his offensive stats being quite excellent, he can wreak havoc on the battlefield with his Dark Moves even without the benefit of the STAB. I actually made my Luxray a faux-Dark/Electric 'Mon by slapping the Dread Plate on him early on not quite good as the STAB, granted, but pretty much the next best thing, especially when there are no Type weaknesses involved.

I'll tactfully describe Luxray's Move Pool as not exactly optimized. The electric lynx can learn only three Electric Moves by levelling up, and those Moves are weirdly chosen to say the least. Luxray first learns Spark at lv.13, a physical Move with 65 power, 20 PP and 100% accuracy pretty good, especially for a Move learnt so early. Then, a whole 22 levels later at lv.35, Luxray learns Thunder Fang: a physical Move with 65 power, 95% accuracy and 15 PP. Pray tell, why on earth would I replace Spark with Thunder Wave, when the latter is less efficient than the former? And then comes the ultimate trolling, when Luxray finally learns the very last Move of his levelling-up learnset at lv.56: Discharge, a bloody special Move. So you're telling me that I waited so long, only to be handed a Move that doesn't make the most of Luxray's highest offensive stat, i.e. his Attack? And mind you, I was running solo and thus was pretty much bound to reach lv.56 no matter what; but I feel for all the players who leveled up the Sinnoh lynx which has a medium slow levelling-up rate, en passant only to be slapped in the face with such an ineffective Move pool. TMs could have saved the day for Luxray; but unfortunately, all the Electric Moves he can learn on that front are special Moves as well. On the other hand, his Dark and Normal Moves are all physical; knowing that, what do you think my Move pool ended up being? Heck, you guessed it: Spark, Bite, Crunch and Return. Way to go and destroy Luxray's potential, GameFreak! Heck, no wonder the poor thing has been vegetating in the depths of the NU and PU tiers ever since his arrival.

When it comes to Diamond and Sinnoh itself, our reunion was not exactly emotional. I was shocked by how graphically primitive Diamond is, especially compared to the lush Gen III: it's like GameFreak forgot how to create textures between Gen III and Gen IV or, more likely, they couldn't wrap their head around the DS and didn't manage to make the most of its graphical capabilities. Diamond&Pearl's graphical crudity could have been a tad alleviated, had Sinnoh itself boasted more variety in terms of landscapes and vistas; but alas, we're dealing with a dreadfully homogeneous region that sports the same sickly green grass and trees from beginning to end. As a matter of fact, the whole Diamond&Pearl colour palette is a bit off, which doesn't help their case at all. Nor does the indolent pacing, which contrasts violently with Gen III's overall swiftness: everything in D&P is slow and sluggish, from battling to surfing to looking for items and don't even get me started on the marshes and the snow. It certainly doesn't help that wild areas between towns are so darn huge and take so long to be crossed a fact not quite compensated by the lenient random encounter rate, which is probably the lowest in the whole series. I rushed through Sinnoh from beginning to end, not ever dilly-dallying along the way; and yet, my run clocked at 15 long, plodding hours.

Despite those letdowns, my Luxray solo run was great fun. I'm glad I could put the electric lynx to the test at long last, and I'm planning to do the same with the other pure Electric Sinnoh 'Mon, i.e. the adorable Pachirisu. Stay tuned for more electrifying Gen IV adventures, dear fellow gamers! Thanks for reading as usual, and drop by anytime!

  1. Huh, I never noticed that the graphics were worse in some regards compared to gen III...probably because I turned away from pokemon after gen I and came back on gen IV, coupled with the fact that I haaaaaaateeee Hoen, but you are right.

Still better than the endless water and the way you have to keep backtracking n gen III. I'd take Sinnoh over Hoen any day, especially over the gen III remakes that make the games even slower.

I replayed gen IV last year, and my only real complaint is that it's so darn slow, even Platinum. And yet, given how lacklustre the gen III remakes were compared to gen II, and how absolutely terrible sun and moon were....I don't even know if I want these games to be remade. Heck, the fact that I actually enjoyed Let's Go Eevee only makes me feel worse about Sword and Shield, because I know Gamefreak will be Gamefreak and will go like "Well, we rocked the boat enough with that spin off, now back to doing the same crap. Following pokemon? Too much work. Reworking the candy system into the main games to replace EV training? But then we can't do online crap! Portable PC boxes? Yeah, we could, but why bother? We're too busy adding two billion cutscenes and a side activity with Pokemon footbal, now that's something to sink your teeth into, like mantaray riding and taking photographs! Improving the series in even small ways is so generation V, we're busy using the switch's capabilities to the tell the same story for the 5th time! Good pacing is for remakes and spin offs only, make way for the world being in peril by an evil team missusing a legendary, now 35% lengthier and shinier."

I hope I'm wrong like I was with Let's Go (kind of), but I have a bad feeling...gods, I love Pokemon, but I'm so sick of it. Back to replaying gen V I guess.

Also may I suggest a solo run with Shellos/Gastrodon? No particular reason, I just really think it's cute, and the water/ground combo is fairly unique. I sure liked my little fellow during one of my nuzlockes, and this is the only game you can get it early. It's another gen IV pokemon that you rarely see in the wild in later gens.

    1. I laughed so hard at your Gamefreak rant! It's right on the mark. And heck, you're right about Gen IV being slow as heck. I'm playing Pearl right now, and the pacing (or lack thereof) is totally killing me. Somehow, I get the feeling that Pearl is slower than Diamond, if that's even possible! On the other hand, I don't remember suffering from that same glacial pacing the last time I replayed Platinum; so maybe I'm gonna ditch Pearl and Diamond entirely and stick with Platinum from now on.

You'll be happy to learn that Shellos is indeed part of my shortlist of Gen IV solo run material, along with Budew, Glameow, Buizel and Lopunny! I love unusual double typings, so Shellos is right up my alley. Stay tuned for a future Shellos solo run! ^__^

    2. I swear that when I saw the trailer reveal showing the MC in football clothes and making the entrace to the stadiu, all epic, I felt a deep shiver down my soul, like a Kappa was trying to steal it through my butt. Just....no.

I mean, Square couldn't make fantasy football fun when they actually good, what chance does poor "our console entry looks barely improved from the last 3DS one" Gamefreak have? None! And even if it is good, like let's go eevee is (sorta), what does it matter? It will be replaced with Pokemon tap dancing or whatever in the next generation. I just dread the cutscenes that will be forced upon me even when I have no plans in playing the darn mini-game.

I'm so darn bitter over pokemon. And it's not like there's any good spin offs to make me see the franchise in a better light like there was in the DS era (though ironcally, pokemon was the best on the DS). The last two mistery dungeon sucked and I doubt we'll ever get more. Pokemon ranger isn't possible anymore, and neither is Pokemon art academy. Pokemon Conquest took way too much work, so we'll never see that again either.

Not even a puzzle game now that those games are farmed out to mobile as endless money grabs. Damn.

Let's Go was sort of a spin off, and I enjoyed it, but then again, it didn't feel like one? And with sword and shield, I just dread seeing more news on it. I don't want to see the new overhyped, overdesigned lengendaries we'll have to save the world from this time. I don't want to see the team that will be trying to steal them. I kinda want to see the new pokemon, but I don't want to have my heart broken over the fact that following pokemon are out, again.

Damn, I'm fatigued. Digimon Survive can't come out soon enough. At least that series keeps switching things up. I'm hoping it will be the Devil Survivor 3 that Atlus refuses to make. And if not, whatever, at least it will be new for Digimon.

....I honestly forgot Buizel existed, poor thing. But Budew and Lopunny are good for sure. It'd also be good to see if you could complete a Glameow run this time, with all the experience you have now.

I also think Pearl is the slowest game out all, for some reason. It's like playing Sun and Moon on an OG 3DS. But Platinum is the way to go for sure, and even that is unbearable compared to gen V. I actually recently sold Pearl and Diamond just for this reason. Shame. Sinnoh is really cool.

    3. Kumiko! Long time no see! You didn't comment for so long, I was getting worried. Good to have you back! ^__^

I didn't know about the football gimmick in Sword and Shield... And man, I'm a bit crestfallen to learn about it. Those gimmicks are getting soooo boring, just like the cutscenes. All that crap destroys that sweet dungeon-crawling feeling I love to get from my Pokemon runs, and it sucks. On the other hand, I was not planning to play Sword and Shield any time soon, so I'll probably have enough time to steel myself for what's undoubtledy going to be a major annoyance. GameFreak will probably make it mandatory to boot, just like that darn manta ray surfing and legendary riding in Ultra Sun&Moon.

Did you really sell Pearl and Diamond recently? What a coincidence, I pawned them as well no later than two days ago! And boy, what that a relief. I really love Sinnoh, but that pair completely sucks my will to live every time I play it. How on earth did I managed to fall in love with the series through playing Diamond? I'm sure my crush on Pokemon would have been ten times more intense if I had started with any other entry! :P

    4. I actually never left; I just switched to Lizzie. I thought I had told all the blogs I comment on of the change, but I either forgot or the comment got lost. And now, either google or blogstop was being dumb, because suddenly it didn't let me comment as Lizzie anymore (hence why the other comment was anonymous), but it lets me do it as Kumiko...or I think. Let's see what identity this comment falls under.

They actually didn't announce the football gimmick in the trailer, but they might as well, since they finish the trailer off with the PC wearing a football uniform and entering the stadium. With the fact that it was the scene they choose to close the trailer on, the music, the visuals and the PC's expression, it's clear they were trying to make it seem like the coolest thing in the multiverse. So I very much doubt you can skip it. Unless it's a new replacement for the gyms? But I don't have much hope, nor would I like that; I hate football!

I can already see myself breaking my fragile joycon by desperately mashing A as I try to get it over with as fast as possible.

I sold my copies about a week ago, and actually got a fair price for them considering they're so common. After gen V I never bought all the games in a gen again, and I doubt I ever will. Heartgold/Soulsilver and all of gen V are very much worth it, so I never see myself parting with them. But still, despite all the flaws, Diamond did bring me back to pokemon after almost 10 years(yes, it was Diamond for me as well), so Sinnoh is just full of charm. Although now that I think about it, Digimon was in a major slump at the time and there were no other monster games, so this and the fact that the DS spin offs were amazing probably helped colour my view a lot. Now with Digimon being amazing and Yokai Watch being around, it's another reason for my lack of patience with Pokémon's BS.

Good thing we didn't start/come back in the 3DS generation, or else our passion would be much lower. What a terrible first impression Sun and Moon are to newcomers.

    5. So that was actually you in the first comment? That's hilarious! :D But I never got a single comment under the name Lizzie, and I didn't know you had changed your user name. On the other hand, there has been a number of anonymous comments lately, left by someone who seemed very familiar with the blog. Could it actually have been you all along?

I also got a really good price for my copies of Diamond and Pearl, which surprised me. I guess this is a testament to Pokemon's enduring popularity, even after the (relative) stumbling block that was Gen VII. And Platinum has become insanely expensive these last years! It was already not cheap at all when I bought it four years ago, and prices have skyrocketed since. I'm never, ever letting go of my copy! My preeecious! :D

    6. Wait, I only noticed now that it was left as anonymous. The name also has some Japanese characters in it, so maybe that's why it messed up? It worked fine on another blog though....

But yeah, if the comments seem familiar, it was me. I never really stopped commenting here. Oreshika was me, Valkyrie was me, basically most if not all comments since Kumiko 'disappeared'.

Platinum is never leaving me either. The DS games price in general seems to fluctuate a lot, but you can get a good price on all of them. I guess it's good pokemon is so popular, but I'm not getting rid of any more. Well, maybe either my copy of Sun or Ultra Moon, since they're so similar and I hate that gen so much.

    7. So that was you after all! Man, am I glad to learn that. You last left a comment as Kumiko at the end of 2018 — under my Jigglypuff solo run report, if I remember correctly. We were both sailing rough waters at the time and talking a bit about it in comments; so when "Kumiko" disappeared for months on end after that... Well, I was worried. I'm relieved to learn that you've been around all that time, and happy that you kept reading my stuff! ^__^

Talking about this, I hope that stormy time you were going through is over and that you're now sailing more peaceful waters. The weather is clearing for good on my side, after a couple of really foul months. Heck, there were some times I was just a hairbreadth away from ditching gaming and blogging entirely — it just seemed so futile, and I had a hard time enjoying it with all the shite going on in my life. But I'm glad I soldiered on and keep playing and writing; it proved to be an anchor of sorts and gave me some much-needed balance during those nasty times.

    8. Darn, I'm really sorry for having worried you. I have no idea how I didn't notice that this was happening to my comments for so long; and it really is baffling why it started happening in the first place.

Sadly, things have not gotten better for me, and have only gotten more tumultuous these past couple of months. This is why my comments have gotten a bit more sporadic,as I just need to go into the down low sometimes. I'm hoping it will finally all pass by August though. In the meantime, at least my joy for painting was reignited, so I have that at least.

Thanks for the concern. I did notice something a bit tense about your writing for a while, but I'm truly glad to see it has past. I always enjoy reading your writing, it’s a nice escape from the political, greedy times gaming and its accompanying media is going through right now, so it’s doubtful I’ll ever be gone. Gaming blogs are rare nowadays, discord is a mess, and youtube comments and gaming sites’ forums are poison, so this is actually one of the few places I have to actually discuss games.

    9. Thanks a million for the kind words! ^__^ Boy, am I glad to learn that you feel good here and enjoy reading my gaming musings. And you're right about gaming blogs getting rarer, unfortunately. Most gaming-related websites nowadays make dough by relaying information and controversies, and it's getting absurdly difficult to unearth genuine and personal thoughts about games. As for gaming videos on Youtube... Gosh, what a mess. I used to gorge on them; but the general tone these last years has become some poisonous and utterly negative that I now avoid them like the plague. I only check once in a while on Silver League Networks and others beloved gaming Youtubers of mine.

I'm sending you plenty of positive vibes, and hope that things will indeed get better for you by August. Stay strong, you'll make it! <3
